Show Your Love in February for Books & Learning

Adopt-a-Book for Moravia Community Schools Library

The Moravia Community School libraries are in need of newer, up-dated resources to support the education and reading interests of students.  So during the month of February, the Moravia Community School Libraries will be running an Adopt-a-Book program to raise funds for the purchase of new, quality, durable books.
The program allows participants to 'adopt a book' and dedicate it to someone special.  It is a chance to say "thank you" to someone you care for, and it also makes a statement about the value you place on books, libraries, reading, and learning.
Participants in the Adopt-a-Book program can select the type of book (fiction, nonfiction, animals, sports, etc.) to be purchased.  A book which meets the needs of the library based on the sponsor's preferences will be ordered.
After the book is received and processed, a commemorative bookplate bearing the name of the person being honored or memorialized will be placed inside.  The wording on the bookplate may be customized as the sponsor wishes.  The library will notify the honoree of their gift, and the recipient will have the right to check it out first.
Participation in the Adopt-a-Book program requires a minimum donation of $20 and is tax deductible.  Please keep in mind that the libraries will purchase especially durable books to ensure their longevity.  Book prices vary so any remaining balance after the purchase of a book will go towards purchasing additional books for the libraries.
To sponsor and dedicate a new book for the Adopt-a-Book program, complete an Adopt-a-Book form and return it to a Moravia Community School library, along with your minimum donation of $20.  Forms are available in the school libraries or in the attachment below.
For more information, contact Judi Millemon or Trish Tarbell, library associates, at (641)724-3311, or Leann Seddon, K-12 Teacher-Librarian, at leann.seddon@moravia.k12.ia.us.

District Raises $350 for Earthquake Victims in Haiti

The Character Counts Committee and the Moravia School District sponsored a change drive from Jan. 18-29  to focus on the pillar of Caring.  The students and faculty donated $350.00 in loose change during this time which will go to the American Red Cross.

The Moravia Student Council also held a Spirit Dance recently in which half the proceeds were also donated to the American Red Cross to help aid the relief efforts in Haiti.

We are very proud of our students for their generosity and demonstrating how to make a difference by caring for others.

Together everyone can achieve much!

Emergency School Closure Process

The Moravia Community School District has once again evaluated the process it uses to decide when to close schools due to bad weather and how to best alert parents and students about the closure.

The district is aware of the implications of emergency school closures. We realize when schools shut down parents must make alternative plans, bus and food services must be altered, class and test schedules must change, and events must be canceled. We also feel strongly that our students’ education can best be served when they are in class; however, safety is our number one priority. We will always do what is best to safeguard the well-being of our students and staff, but sometimes closing schools is not the obvious choice. Our school district covers 160 square miles that covers the width of an entire county  There have been times when the weather has changed, road conditions have deteriorated, or a storm has stalled over the area and a last minute decision has been made to close. These late decisions are made to protect our students and staff. There are many factors that are considered.

The images of our bus drivers on slippery roads, of young children standing at frozen bus stops, and teens, or their parents, driving in hazardous conditions is always present when the decision is made to close schools. Once the decision is made, the Moravia Community Schools must disseminated the message quickly to the media, staff, and parents.

For the most up to date notifications be sure you create a user account on our website at www.moraviacsd.com and sign up for instant text messages by entering your cell phone number.  When you do this you will receive a confirmation text message on your phone indicating which you will enter on the website.  Once you do this you will receive text messages for cancellations and delays.

*Some stations get the information on faster than others.  The best advice is to listen to more than one so our information is not overlooked.

Since parents are the primary protectors, they will need to decide what is best for their children regardless of any decision by the school district. The option to keep children home when weather conditions are extreme is always at the parents' discretion and the school understands and respects the decision. Parents can contact the school and arrange for an excused student absence. All families should make advanced arrangement for their children in case of school closures and for the rare situation when it is necessary to close school because of a power failure or another circumstance. Children should know where to go if a parent will not be home and how to contact parents and guardians. Make sure your parent contact information, including work telephone numbers, are kept up-to-date with the school.

During cold weather you should always make sure your child is dressed appropriately.  Bulky coats and boots can be stored in classrooms, or other areas designated by the principal in addition to student lockers so don't be afraid to bundle them up.

Working together we can ensure the safety of the Moravia Community Schools during the hazardous weather season.
